This natural woodland reserve is a bird watcher's paradise. There is a 1 hour nature trail complete with information boards. This is an immense, sparsely populated plateau of granite and woodland that gives rise to the river Yonne. The Morvan Natural Regional Park is also the source of the river Cure that runs past Vezelay and joins the river Yonne at Cravant and the river Cousin that skirts around Avallon and joins the river Cure at Sermizelles. The largest towns of the Morvan Natural Regional Park are Chateau-Chinon (Ville) in the centre and Saulieu on the outskirts. Saulieu is a walled town that was known in Roman times as Sidolocus or Sedelocus. Highest point is Haut Folin (901 m). The Morvan was a WW2 bastion of French resistance. There is a Resistance Museum at Saint-Brisson. Link forward 5. The local region Link back 4.2 Canal du Nivernais |
